08 - Keyword Density

Keyword Density is the number of times your keyword appears on a given web page in relation to the total number of words on that same page. Take the total number of words and divide it by the number of times your keyword appears and you have the Keyword Density Percentage.

This is an important number and you should pay attention to it. Eventually you'll be making yourself a spreadsheet (or using the one I will give to you) and making note of every site in the Top-10 for a given keyword.

The idea of this analysis is to get your site to have the same (or close to) density as the site in the #1 position. It's not as simple as it sounds, because Google takes 200 different items into consideration when ranking a site. Simply matching up the keyword density isn't going to catapult you into the #1 position. But it is certainly something to consider.

If I was going to tell you right now that you want to get a 12% density on your pages I'd be steering you in the wrong direction. So much of all these little variables depend on other variables. Keyword density when a page is 1,000 words is going to be different than on the page that is 300 words. It's relevant, it's crazy, it's all dependant on many, many other variables.

So, what's my point? My point is that all these things change with regularity. I want you to learn how to think SEO, work SEO and create well optimized websites. Notice I say "websites" instead of web pages. A truly optimized site has many pages of different sizes and densities. Think out of the box and don't ever believe that you need to have 1,000 words and a keyword density of 12% and 12 words in the title, and 25 words in the description and 20 keywords in the meta ... forget about all that and learn to create with diversity. Just to say so, one thing I have learned is that the important page is usually the one that gets put up in the Top-10, regardless of size and density. Somehow the algorithms can (well sometimes anyway!!!) tell the really informative page from the not so informative.

Stick to the basics though. Use headlines, mention your keywords early on, then some more, a bit in the middle and finish up with some scattered around. This is reality. Think SEO. Write like you talk. Pay attention to people talking next time you are out somewhere and folks are jibber jabbering. Our natural way of communication is to define what we are talking about (keywords) chat about it some, get waylaid or intense while you chat away about something interjecting your philosophies, ideas, opinions etc., and then some more defined jibber jabber and then close the story.

It's easy to get your keyword density with NoteTabPro. Just click on the little graph looking icon up on top (if you have it setup on the toolbar) or click on "Tools" and then "Text Statistics".

Lately, a 1% to 2% keyword density on a 500 to 750 word page has been working very well. I like to vary the density between pages and keep track of it. When the pages start getting listed you'll be able to see is working and what isn't. Then go ahead and fine tune your other pages. Having said this, it's always a good idea to keep varying densities across some pages. When an algorithm change occurs having varying densities across many pages may provide you with the key to the change in the algorithm.
